Armin van Buuren
Armin van Buuren is once more lord of the Trance and the king of the dance floor, taking the No. 1 spot in the DJ Mag Top 100 for the third year running. Being the official World's Most Popular DJ is just one of his many achievements, but the driving force behind his success is an overriding passion for dance music. Armin van Buuren was born in Leiden, the Netherlands on December 25, 1976. He finished high school in 1995, and left for college to study law. While studying law, his interest for making music blossomed, and he began working as a DJ in a local club called Nexus. As his musical career began to take off, he temporarily put his law degree on hold, however, he did complete his law degree in 2004 via Oxford University. The final year of his course was inevitably stretched as he juggled his studies with his increasingly hectic schedule; his rise to fame included lots of productions and remixes, as well as playing out to packed clubs every weekend. It took him three years to graduate, but his determination made him succeed. Armin indulged his passion for music from a young age. He spent all the money he earned on records. When he was 10, his mother won a computer, gaining Armin's interest. "So as a little nerdy kid I was writing my own basic programs, and learnt about the technology from there." He progressed from making low profile mix tapes for friends to higher profile mixes when he discovered experimenting with different sequences on his computer through his uncle. "I was so stunned by what I saw him doing on the computer, that I got addicted to creating music right there and then! "I loved Dance music immediately – this great rebellious sound that was so different". Armin cites electronic pioneer Jean Michel Jarre as a major influence, as well as Dutch producer Ben Liebrand, who later mentored him in his mixing and producing. His "Universal Religion" series has been going strong ever since the first edition in 2004. Every edition is a live recording, straight from the epicenter of Dance in summer: Club Amnesia in Ibiza. Every summer, Armin holds residency in this renowned club on the party isle. As the club fills with Dance lovers from all over the world, a special, atmosphere takes over, these special moments of pure Trance bliss, Armin captures onto his "Universal Religion" albums. Latest "Universal Religion 4" is filled with exclusive tracks and remixes, in a tight mix, live recorded at the sacred club. Armin has always had his own studio and worked alone in the beginning of his career. Since the release of his third studio album "Imagine" in 2008 he has been working with Benno de Goeij of Rank1 on all his productions and remixes. Since 1995, he has released many tracks on different labels with increasing success. His first big success was "Blue Fear" at the age of 19. This 'Euro Trance blueprint' made it into the UK Chart. "Communication" was released on the same label, and had a huge impact on Ibiza in the summer of 1999. After being signed to AM PM Records, it busted into the UK Singles Chart at #18 in 2000. Early 1999 Armin started the Armind label together with United Recordings. First release, "Gig One" was well received. Follow up "Touch Me", under the alias Rising Star, was signed to Ministry of Sound UK, while "Free" was signed to R&S Records. Under the Gaia monniker he released "4 Elements" on Captivating Sounds, a sub-label of Warner Brothers. Teaming up with Tiësto, two new projects saw life; under the guise Major League "Wonder Where You Are?" was released on Black Hole Recordings while "Eternity" was released via Armind under the alias Alibi. "Eternity" gained worldwide club and chart success and was signed to Paul van Dyk's Vandit Records. Another major collaboration, this time with Ferry Corsten, resulted in the classic and very successful Trancer "Exhale". In 2000, Armin started his own Armin van Buuren compilation series. He managed to find a balance between Progressive, Techno and Trance. First "A State of Trance" compilation, released in 2000, it sold more than 10,000 copies and contains his infamous remix of Moogwai's, "Viola". The "A State Of Trance" compilations have won many awards and continue to lead the Trance fans in the right direction with a fresh and exclusive selection of the hottest tracks. Second compilation "Basic Instinct" saw its release early 2001. Third compilation "In Motion" was released August 2001 with 4th comp "Transparence", hitting the streets in 2002. In 2003 the "76" compilation saw light with Ultra Records releasing in USA and Canada. 1 BIOGRAPHY (continued) In 2008 his artist album titled 'Imagine' entered the Dutch Album Top 100 Chart at no. 1; the first time a Dance producer accomplished such a feat in the history of Dutch music. The first single taken from the album, "Going Wrong", debuted on his A State Of Trance radio show. The single sees the collaboration of Armin van Buuren with hot German producer Shah and singer Chris Jones. 'Imagine' debuted at #4 on the US Billboard's Top Electronic Albums Chart. Video of second single "In and Out of Love", featuring Sharon den Adel from world renowned Goth rockers Within Temptation, achieved more than 35 million views on YouTube. The album also spawned two more singles, "Unforgivable" featuring Jaren, and "Fine Without You", a collaboration with Jennifer Rene. On the remix front While the remix offers flood in, Armin only takes on tracks that he really loves. He has remixed the theme for the cult TV series 24 as well as tracks for the likes of Motorcycle, The Killers, BT and Moogwai, amongst others. He uses exactly the same criteria for his compilations, meaning that every release from Armin on his long-running Armind label is a bona fide stormer. Todd Rundgren
Event on 2012-05-29 20:00:00
A Wizard, A True Star. The title of Todd Rundgren's 1973 solo album aptly sums up the contributions of this multi-faceted artist to state-of-the-art music. As a songwriter, video pioneer, producer, recording artist, computer software developer, conceptualist, and, most recently, interactive artist (re-designated TR-i), Rundgren has made a lasting impact on both the form and content of popular music.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Rundgren began playing guitar as a teenager, going on to found and front The Nazz, the quintessential `60's cult group. In 1969, he left the band to pursue a solo career, recording his debut offering, the legendary Runt. But it was 1972's seminal Something/Anything?, on which he played all the instruments, sang all the vocal parts, and acted as his own producer, that catapulted Todd into the superstar limelight, prompting the press to unanimously dub him 'Rock's New Wunderkind'. It was followed by such landmark LPs as The Hermit of Mink Hollow and the above mentioned A Wizard, A True Star, as well as such hit singles as I Saw The Light, Hello It's Me, Can We Still Be Friends, and Bang The Drum.
In 1974, Todd formed Utopia, an entirely new approach to the concept of interactive musicianship, and embarked on an extensive round of touring and recording. Standout Utopia offerings included Oops! Wrong Planet, Adventures in Utopia, and Oblivion. Along the way, Utopia combined technical virtuosity and creative passion to create music that, for millions, defined the term "progressive rock."
Rundgren's myriad production projects include albums by Patti Smith, Cheap Trick, Psychedelic Furs, Meatloaf, XTC, Grand Funk Railroad, and Hall And Oates. Rounding out his reputation as rock's Renaissance Man, Rundgren composed all the music and lyrics for Joe Papp's 1989 Off-Broadway production of Joe Orton's Up Against It (the screenplay commisioned by The Beatles for what was meant to have been their third motion picture). He also has composed the music for a number of television series, including Pee Wee’s Playhouse and Crime Story.
Early last year Rundgren performed his iconic 1973 album A Wizard A True Star in concert in its entireity for the first time ever, and recently did the same with a double bill: Todd & Healing. His latest two studio albums Todd Rundgren’s Johnson, a collection of classic Robert Johnson songs, and reProduction, covers of songs Todd has produced for other artists were released in the US in April and September, respectively.
In 1998 Todd debuted his new PatroNet technology which for the first time allowed fans of a musical artist to subscribe directly to the artist’s musical output via the Internet. This caps a long history of groundbreaking early multimedia "firsts", including:
• 1978: The first interactive television concert, broadcast live over the Warner/QUBE system in Columbus, Ohio (the home audience chose each song.in real time during the concert by voting via QUBE’s 2-way operating system).
• 1978: The first live nationally broadcast stereo radio concert (by microwave), linking 40 cities around the country.
• 1979: The opening of Utopia Video Studios, a multi-million dollar state-of-the-art facility. The first project produced by Todd there is Gustav Holst’s The Planets, commissioned by RCA SelectaVision as the first demonstration software for their new videodisc format.
• 1980: Creation of the first color graphics tablet, which was licensed to Apple and released as The Utopia Graphics Tablet.
• 1981: Time Heals, the first music video to utilize state-of-the-art compositing of live action and computer graphics (produced and directed by Todd), becomes the second video to be played on MTV (after Video Killed the Radio Star).
• 1982: The first live national cablecast of a rock concert (on the USA Network), simulcast in stereo to over 120 radio stations.
• 1982: The first two commercially released music videos, one of which was nominated for the first-ever Grammy awarded for “Best Short Form Video” in 1983.
• 1992: The release of “No World Order”, the world’s first interactive record album on CD-i. Also the first commercially available music downloads via CompuServe.
• 1994: The release of “The Individualist”, the world’s first full-length Enhanced CD.
• 1995: The world’s first interactive concert tour.
• 1998: Launches PatroNet, the world’s first direct artist subscription service
