Question by Ricky Bobby: Digital Photography?
I would like to get into digital photography in a serious way. I’ve got my SLDR camera + accessories and am studying my exposures and focal lengths. I’ve heard of amateur photographers getting noticed, even selling their work. How does one get started? Should I start some website and post my photos? What’s the best way to get noticed? And how do you actually go about selling them?
………..
of course, I meant DSLR camera.
Thanks for the answers sofar. Any budding digital photographers here have a blog site with their photos and details of how they took the picture? If so, also grateful if you could leave your blogsite so I can have a look and see how it’s supposed to be done. Many thanks for all your answers thusfar!

Let me start by saying this: it’s very difficult to sell photographs. That being said, the easiest way to get started is to do a blog. You can post images there and describe what’s in the pictures and how you did the shots. Also, PBase is an online photo gallery where you can sign up and start uploading images. There is some amazing stuff there – definitely worth looking at even if you don’t sign up. Then, there are online stock agencies. I would suggest Alamy because it’s relatively easy to get started. Then, finally, check into a local photo club. Clubs often have competitions in different categories, and these things are a good learning opportunity. You can see what others are doing and you can learn from judges comments. Sometimes, you may get to exhibit photos with the club for sale at local municipal buildings, etc. Good luck!

You have an SLDR? No you don’t, you have a DSLR.
Once you’ve worked on your photography enough and you think you’re “worth noticing”, you should start a blog of some sort. Definantly get a Flickr account at http://www.flickr.com: it’s free, it’s fun, and you’ll be able to see the work of others.

A website is good, but websites are so easy to set up that the Internet is flooded with sites and a multitude of picture sharing services.

Becoming a serious photographer requires more than just investment in a good camera and equipment. You need to make contacts with professional photographers. There are lots of professional organizations that can help you network.

And sometimes you have to work in print. I got my first showing in the lobby of a local community theater because one of the actors was familiar with my work. I sold several prints that way.

You have to do photography that makes you stand out from every Joe Blow that has a camera. I picked a niche that got a lot of attention.

nowadays if you set up your own site – it can get pretty expensive. and it might not be worth it cause you can just click save as. but enjoy if you want. gettyimages.com is an awesome site with hundreds of photos
