Basics Of Video Editing Getting
This video is the first in a Lifehacker Night School series on the basics of video editing. It introduces you to professional video editing environments, how they differ from simplified editing environments, and what everything is on your screen. This series will primarily deal with Final Cut Pro, but it will also point out how things work similarly in Adobe Premiere since we will be learning how video editing works with professional software more than we will be learning a specific software title. Future lessons will discuss setting up projects from scratch, importing footage from cameras, color correction and effects, and more. There will be a new lesson every day this week, so keep checking Lifehacker.com for updates.
As a video editor, it should be your goal to constantly improve. Here are some basic techniques that I have found to be important through my video experience, and I hope you find it helpful. *Edit* A good video editor will constantly improve. As I watch this video months later, I see ways I could have made it better. This is an actual tutorial, I made it for one of my classes, and I thought that I would share it with youtube. I’m not claiming to know everything about video, and I know that there is much more I can learn. Like I said, this is just some basic stuff, but feel free to post more tips in the comment section.

@threethousandwords Excellent tip, my last hard drive bricked on me a couple of years ago & I lost about 100+ hours of original footage so now I back up everything.
@TheMatt7000 NOBODY uses iMovie Professionally. . . mostly because it SUCKS.
PROTIP: If you have a dropbox, set your AUTOSAVE Vault there. . . WHEN (not if) your machine goes down, being able to go back to your original source tapes, and relink your media will be essential. . . and made possible by your Autosave vault. >:)

its good if you have fcp, to take the audio mixer took and stick it next to the timeline, then have the filebox above it with the same width. That audio mixer is awesome for quality control
as long as you stick the capture scratch in a media folder, you can bring it everywhere without having to bring all the other crap. You will need to re-render on any new computer tho
how do you have all these applications open including FCP, and premiere, without lagging?? You have a supercomputer or something??

What I learnt from this video:
1. Mr. Noodles only takes 2 minutes in the microwave.
2. Some people actually need to be told to cut their videos.
This is actually quite a good tutorial. Second video from top when searching “video editing tips.” I’m just getting into editing. I’ve never made a youtube video, but I’ve got a mass of footage of me dog walking that I need to turn into something. Not sure what to do yet. This tutorial really helped.

@StoneWashburn I made this three years ago, when I was in college….So…I’m better now. I’m pretty sure I just recorded the voiceover with a $10 mic I bought from Wal-Mart in like 2007. They probably don’t even make them anymore. I have a yeti mic now, and if I do more tutorials (which I may sometime), they will sound a lot better.
